SSL (Secure Sockets Layer)

SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) is a cryptographic protocol designed to secure the transmission of data over the internet, particularly between a user's browser and a website. It ensures that the data exchanged, such as personal information, passwords, payment details, and other sensitive data, is encrypted and protected from unauthorized access or tampering.

When a website has SSL enabled, it uses an SSL certificate to establish a secure, encrypted connection. The SSL protocol uses a system of public and private keys to encrypt the data, making it unreadable to anyone who intercepts the communication. Only the intended recipient, with the corresponding private key, can decrypt and access the data.

Websites with SSL enabled are identified by "HTTPS" in the URL (instead of the standard "HTTP") and often display a padlock icon in the address bar of browsers. This visual cue helps users know that their connection is secure. SSL also boosts user trust, as it shows that the website is committed to protecting their privacy and securing their interactions.

SSL is a critical component of website security and is especially important for eCommerce sites, online banking, and any platform that handles sensitive data. It helps prevent man-in-the-middle attacks, phishing, and data breaches, contributing to both user safety and SEO (since search engines like Google favor HTTPS websites in rankings).
